Welcome

Last year's conference, entitled, "Emerging Asia: Shedding New Light on the Legal Landscape," featured a broad scope of topics reflecting the growing influence of East Asia and the complicated issues resulting from globally expanding legal practices. This year, we will be directing our attention to something a little closer to home. The Eighth Annual Mid-Atlantic APALSA Conference, entitled, "A New Model for the Model Minority," will present us with the opportunity to reexamine the Asian American identity in the law.

For better or for worse, the term "model minority" has been frequently associated with Asian American identity. However, can a single model really be said to capture the Asian American identity in the law? What are the stereotypes that may have followed us, as Asian Americans have achieved success in this profession? Through a panoply of speakers sharing their wide-ranging experiences, we hope to present not a single, discrete model, but a mosaic of different forms.

With every passing year, we see the Asian American community expanding in number and into all fields of the legal profession, and it is our privilege to provide this conference as a forum for Asian American law students and legal professionals to network and explore new intellectual and professional terrain together. Our goal this and every year is to inspire activism in our careers and our communities. We've chosen speakers to inspire young Asian American lawyers to take the helm and lead in their own way, whether through academia, public service, business or the judiciary, and panel topics that can serve as focal points for this important and continuous conversation.

The conference will be held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School's Levy Conference Center on Saturday, January 31, 2009 from 11 o'clock to 6 o'clock, followed by an employer reception for law students and a dinner banquet. We invite you to engage our speakers and hear how they have shaped their own models for success. In turn, perhaps you will each be inspired to discover your own model.

For any questions about the conference, please do not hesitate to contact us at inquiries@pennapalsa.org.

Regards,

Jonathan Chou, President, University of Pennsylvania Law School APALSA
